Charles Leclerc 'still far away' from a World title

Although billed as a future World Champion, Charles Leclerc says he is “still far away” from that goal.

Last season the Monégasque driver moved from Alfa Romeo to Ferrari, winning two grands prix including Ferrari’s home race at Monza.

Leclerc also claimed the pole position trophy for the year, fastest in seven qualifying sessions.

He finished fourth in the Drivers’ Championship, beating his four-time World Champion team-mate Sebastian Vettel, only the second driver in Vettel’s F1 history to do so.

But what about a World title?

“If I think of becoming World Champion?” he told Sky Sports Italia. “I don’t know what to expect, I’ve never been one.

“I have to work, there is still a long way to go.

“I am happy with the growth that I have had so far but there is still a lot to do.

“I hope to do it one day, but I’m still far away.”

Leclerc will remain at Ferrari until the end of 2024, signing an unheard of four-year extension to his 2020 deal.

2020, though, is yet to get underway.

The circus is on hiatus with F1 chiefs planning a July start.

Leclerc cannot wait.

“I go to sleep and wake up with only one idea in mind, that of driving,” he said.

“I miss it so much, I am training more than ever to be ready when we start again.”
