Fernando Alonso enters the world of virtual racing

Fernando Alonso was the latest driver to make his virtual racing debut as part of The Race All-Star Legends Trophy.

The Spaniard was taking part in the latest round of the series which consisted of two races at Circuit Zandvoort in the Netherlands, home of Formula 1’s Dutch Grand Prix.

While he showed impressive pace to qualify P4, the races were far from ideal for Alonso.

In the first race he would get caught up in several incidents, resulting in a DNF, while in the second a spectacular airborne crash after colliding with fellow ex-F1 driver Tiago Monteiro made it a double-DNF for Alonso.

The Legends Trophy is supposed to be open only to former racing drivers over 40, but the 39-year-old Alonso was given a provisional entry, just like Sebastian Vettel, 32, was granted a few weeks prior.

Both races were ultimately won by the familiar faces of Jan Magnussen and Emanuele Pirro respectively.

The opening race saw Magnussen, father of Haas F1 driver Kevin Magnussen, take the chequered flag 5.541s clear of Jenson Button.

“I wasn’t sure if I could put it on pole, but I knew I could put it in the top three probably,” he said.

“I had a good start, and there was a little bit of stuff going on behind me that gave me a gap so I could just do my own thing – I’m very pleased with that.”

Pirro would finish the first race P10, but that gave him reverse-grid pole and he took full advantage by storming to victory with a 9-second margin.

“I tried to push hard in the first one,” Pirro said.

“I tried to keep out of trouble and it didn’t work! So, I think I deserve that one. The pace was not fantastic, but I am happy for a win.”

P2 and P5 finishes for Button means he now leads the standings by 28 points over Magnussen with two rounds to go.
