Fernando Alonso to Mick Schumacher: Learn to walk before you run

Mick Schumacher needs to learn to walk before he can run in the world of Formula 1; that’s advice from double World Champion Fernando Alonso.

Last year reports claimed that Schumacher, the son of F1 legend Michael, could step up into Formula 1 as early as this year having won the European Formula 3 title.

Instead, the 19-year-old has opted to contest a season of the Formula 2 championship, racing for PREMA.

He does, however, already have ties with a Formula 1 team have been signed to Ferrari’s young driver academy.

Asked if he had any advice for Schumacher, Alonso told Corriere della Sera: “Bearing the weight of that surname and its history, he must earn to walk before running.

“It’s difficult, I know.”

Schumacher raced in Formula 1 until the age of 43 whereas last year, at age 37, Alonso decided it was time to walk away from the sport.

The Spaniard feels age has little to do with a driver deciding when is the right time to retire.

“Schumacher has raced up until 43 years. If you feel strong, you do not need to look at your due date.

“It’s about realising when somebody is stronger than you. This can happen when you’re 25 or when you’re 48.

“Again, age has nothing to do with it.”
