Having overseas fans at Australian GP a 'challenge' | F1 News by PlanetF1

Australian Grand Prix CEO Andrew Westacott has admitted that allowing fans from overseas to attend the race will be difficult.

The race at Albert Park was initially set to host the first round of the 2021 season, but it has now been postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. Instead, it will now take place in November and be the third to last race of the year.

Even so, Westacott thinks that even then, allowing fans from outside Australia to attend the race will be a challenge, and is focusing on welcoming those from within the nation instead.

“Clearly, that is going to be dependent on where those tickets can be sold… Overseas might be a challenge,” he said as per GPFans.

“There is a lot of people nationally who have not had their dose of motorsport from a Formula 1 point of view so we would expect a lot of people from interstate to hopefully be available to come across the borders into Victoria.”

Driver and team face coverings are available now on the official Formula 1 store!

While the majority of races that went ahead in 2020 took place behind closed doors, Westacott is confident that the Australian Grand Prix can go ahead with fans in the stands thanks to various safety measures that have been taken.

“I hope to be able to stage an event that has the maximum number of fans possible,” he added.

“What is that maximum number? I mean, one of the things that we worked very carefully on at the Grand Prix Corporation is to make sure that every facility we have is Covid safe, Covid compliant with the requirements of the Victorian government at the point in time.

“We’ve got a massive outdoor venue, we’ve got a massive facility that can be tailored to those health requirements and, from a Covid point of view, I think that is something that is going to allow us to go on sale and go on sale with large ticket numbers.”

With the Melbourne race being pushed back and the race in China postponed indefinitely, the 2021 calendar is looking more and more uncertain, but the sport has denied reports that the rounds in Monaco, Montreal and Baku are also set to be cancelled.
