Jos Verstappen rubbishes claims Toto Wolff's calling Max

Jos Verstappen has rubbished Red Bull’s claims that rival Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff “regularly” calls Max Verstappen.

Although Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2020, there is a performance clause in the Dutchman’s contract.

This allows him to leave Red Bull should the team not produce the results.

And one team already courting him, at least according to Helmut Marko, is Mercedes.

“There is certainly a performance clause in Max’s contract,” Marko told AutoBild.

“Toto Wolff regularly calls him and his father, Jos.

“I am relaxed about it.

“He feels good with us and if we give him World Championship material, I will not worry that he will stay.”

However, Verstappen’s father Jos has called “nonsense” on this claim, saying that while he chats with Wolff, a friend of his, the team boss has not been trying to lure his son to Mercedes.

“That’s nonsense, Toto never calls Max,” he told De Telegraaf newspaper.

“I don’t even think he has his number.

“I occasionally speak to Toto, but that makes sense.”

Jos, a former F1 driver himself, stated that Verstappen is happy at Red Bull, the team he hopes can help him to a first World title.

He added: “We are very satisfied with Red Bull and with the cooperation with Honda.

“We are working together to make a dream come true.”
