NASCAR Fines Hendrick Motorsports $100,000 for Wind Tunnel Violation

NASCAR has fined Hendrick Motorsports $100,000 for exceeding the amount of wind tunnel testing time permitted this season.

In addition to the monetary fine, NASCAR also reduced by 10 hours the amount of time the organization could spend in the wind tunnel in 2021. Hendrick Motorsports will not appeal to penalty as it also self-reported the infraction.

A new rule for 2020, section 5.3.e, limits teams to a total of 150 hours of tunnel time through Dec. 31, 2021 with a maximum usage of 70 hours in 2020 and a maximum of 90 hours in 2021. Such testing is only permitted at the Aerodyn Wind Tunnel in Moorseville, North Carolina; Auto Research Center in Indianapolis, Indiana; Penske Technology Group Wind Tunnel in Moorseville, North Carolina and Windshear Wind Tunnel in Concord, North Carolina.

Testing hours are defined as billable hours reported by the wind tunnel to NASCAR. The minimum test time period is four hours.

This is an L2 penalty that has a fine range of $100,000 to $200,000.
