Nicholas Latifi in, Robert Kubica out at Williams?

Robert Kubica’s Formula 1 return could yet prove to be short-lived with reports linking test driver Nicholas Latifi to his race seat.

Kubica returned to the Formula 1 grid at this year’s Australian Grand Prix, having signed a deal to race for Williams.

His comeback, though, has been anything but successful.

Williams have struggled for pace with Kubica and his team-mate George Russell fighting over 19th place.

That battle has consistently gone Russell’s way with the rookie not only edging the Polish driver in qualifying but also beating him in all five grands prix.

Kubica had initially stated that he believes there is something wrong his chassis compared to Russell’s. However, when the latter was handed Kubica’s chassis for the Spanish GP, he still beat him.

This has led to reports that Kubica’s days with Williams could be numbered.

According to Canadian newspaper Le Journal de Montreal, test driver Latifi is being lined up as a possible replacement.

While Kubica has struggled this year, Latifi has shone in Formula 2 taking three wins on his way to the lead in the championship.

The report adds that “Kubica reportedly had a clause in his contract stating that he could be replaced during the season.”

Latifi will have another opportunity to show Williams what he can do in an F1 car as he is scheduled to drive the FW42 on both days of this week’s Spanish test.
