Norris verdict

McLaren’s Lando Norris has been handed a three-place grid penalty for ignoring yellow flags during FP1 at the Styrian Grand Prix.

Norris, who secured his first-ever podium finish in the opening race at the Red Bull Ring, was referred to the stewards after an investigation was launched into an alleged yellow flag infraction during Friday practice.

Yellow flags were in force after Nicholas Latifi’s Williams FW43 came to a grinding halt and, during this period, Norris passed both Sergio Perez in the Racing Point and Pierre Gasly in his AlphaTauri – the latter when yellow flags were clearly in operation.

The British driver was told on his exit out of Turn 4 that there were yellow flags at Turn 5.

It's not that Norris ignores yellows – he doesn't, he slows when he should be fully accelerating out of Turn 4 – it's that he overtakes two cars under yellow flags that the stewards are looking at.

And the stewards took a dim view on the incident, giving the Briton a three-place grid penalty for this weekends’ race and two penalty points, his first points of the 12-month period.

“The stewards heard from the driver of car four (Lando Norris) and the team representative and have reviewed video evidence,” read their report.

“On-board footage clearly shows that driver of car four passed car 10 [Gasly] while yellow light panels were clearly visible and yellow flags were shown.”
