Norris voted best driver of the season so far

Fans have voted McLaren’s Lando Norris as the most impressive driver of the 2020 Formula 1 season so far in an official poll.

The official Formula 1 website ran the poll after the 2020 campaign reached it’s halfway point at the Tuscan Grand Prix. Fans were able to vote for any of the 20 permanent drivers and stand-in Nico Hulkenberg, and Norris received 23% of the 87,000 votes.

After a solid rookie season, Norris has kicked on to do even better in his second year with McLaren.

It got off to the perfect start as a stunning final lap in the first race of the season in Austria gave him P3 and his maiden podium. While he’s yet to finish in the top three again, he’s taken a top-six finish a further three times, only failing to score a point in one race.

Thanks to these results, he’s currently P4 in the Driver’s Championship with 65 points, the most of anyone asides from the Mercedes drivers and Max Verstappen.

Such strong performances have led to McLaren’s racing director Andrea Stella to compare the Brit to Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher in recent weeks.

“He’s a very nice guy, very talented. He’s learning how to use his talent, and he’s doing well in this respect. We are very pleased with how every day he’s better than the previous day,” Stella said.

“In a way, this is true when I was working with Fernando or with Michael. One thing I can say: Up to the last day of their career they thought ‘How can I be better than yesterday?’ In a very humble way, it’s the kind of humility you need to succeed.

“So yes, his collaboration with the engineers, with the rest of the team is good. And in the collaboration of our drivers, I think McLaren have an opportunity, compared to what can be happening at other teams.”

The winner of the Italian Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly, finished second to Norris with 18% of the vote, and the two had a considerable margin to the rest of the field.

Lewis Hamilton received 12% of the votes, Verstappen 11%, and 7% voted for Daniel Ricciardo.

The only drivers not to receive a single percentage of the vote were Romain Grosjean, Nicholas Latifi, Antonio Giovinazzi, Daniil Kvyat and Esteban Ocon.
