Racing Point longing for 'normal' weekends | F1 News by PlanetF1

Racing Point technical director Andrew Green says that, in the fight for P3 in the Championship, the team is desperate for some normality.

Despite having the third quickest car on the grid for much of the season, the team doesn’t yet have that spot in the Constructors’ Standings wrapped up by any means.

While Racing Point currently occupies P3, McLaren and Renault are just four and six points behind respectively, with the French team looking particularly strong.

This is entirely the fault of the team soon to be known as Aston Martin, with bad luck playing a large part. Both drivers have fallen ill and missed races, having to be replaced by Nico Hulkenberg, while reliability hasn’t been great.

“To stop getting a lot of bad luck, to start with!” Green said as per racefans.net when asked how P3 can be secured.

“We just don’t seem to be getting the run of the green at the moment. I just want a normal race weekend. We haven’t a normal race weekend probably since race one of this season.

“Something happens every weekend. All we need between now and the end of the season is just to have normal race weekends where we can race the car, set it up normally, just have a normal weekend without any major distractions, and that will give us our best possible opportunity.”

Racing Point introduced some major updates to the RP20 in the last few races, with Lance Stroll getting them first and both cars receiving them at the Eifel Grand Prix.

“We pulled together all the updates that we planned to do into a significant update for the car,” Green added.

“That included the front wing, front brake ducts, floor, rear wing endplates side-pods, bodywork. So that was a big one, that was the aerodynamic aspect.

“On the rear suspension, we did a lot of work on the internals of the rear suspension and the way that the suspension works to give us more flexibility and more options on the rear suspension set-up and also a change to the steering system as well. All of those updates came between Mugello and Russia.”

If the team can finish the season in the top three, it will be the first time doing so for the outfit formerly known as Force India.

“It’s going to be a real battle. There are three teams that are just swapping places all the time. It’s going to be a good fun end to the season,” Green concluded.
