Red Bull wary of 'mighty' Mercedes at slow-speed

Red Bull principal Christian Horner expects Mercedes to be “mighty” at the Hungarian GP due to their slow-speed corner performance.

In the past slow-speed circuits have been a hindrance for the Silver Arrows, but in 2019 one of their biggest strengths has been their superior ability in slow-speed corners.

The Hungaroring is likely then to be a perfect track for Mercedes to bounce back from their German GP woes, and although Horner also rates Red Bull’s chances on a tight and technical circuit, he accepts the team have their work cut out to get the better of their rivals.

“Hungary is a track we enjoy going to,” he told Autosport.

“But Mercedes’s slow corner performance is pretty mighty, and I think they’re going to be tough opponents.”

Max Verstappen has now claimed victory for Red Bull in two of the last three races, and Horner does feel the team are on a solid incline in performance.

“We have been getting more performance on the car,” he said.

“The chassis’s been getting better, the engine’s been getting better and I think we have got some good stuff in the pipeline for the second half of the year.

“We’ve got stable regulations from 2019 into ’20, so whatever we learn this year applies to next year.

“So we want to keep the trajectory going the way we are.”
