Ricciardo: Lewis Hamilton shoey part of a strange 2020 | F1 News by PlanetF1

Daniel Ricciardo has said he was surprised as anyone to see Lewis Hamilton perform a post-race shoey with him at Imola.

Whilst we are all used to seeing Hamilton on the top step of the podium, we are certainly not used to see him offering to drink some of Ricciardo’s toe jam.

But Hamilton did exactly that as he took another major step towards becoming a seven-time World Champion and Ricciardo, who now suddenly has two podiums in three races, could not believe his eyes.

“I think they [the Aussies] will be dancing because I didn’t forget the shoey this time,” Ricciardo told Sky Sports.

“I was about to drink a beautiful, fresh shoey and I heard Lewis [Hamilton] say ‘take your other shoe off’.

“I was like ‘no’, because honestly three years ago on the podium he goes ‘I will never ever do that, I will never drink it. You can offer but I’ll never do it’.

“But he asked for it today and that took me by surprise. 2020 is the year of the strange though so it was good fun.”

Also taking Ricciardo by surprise was Racing Point’s decision to pit Sergio Perez from P3 behind the Safety Car with only a few laps in the race remaining.

Ricciardo added: “I was honestly surprised to see him box. He was quicker than us today and that is the truth. If he stays out with the same car, same tyres he should hold on to third so yeah…very surprised he boxed.

“The team asked how my tyres were and I said I was happy. I think that was enough for them to keep me out. I was more happy to go out swinging and if Perez came through and passed me then that’s what we would have been anyway [P4].

“Definitely the right call and I was also surprised to see Kvyat.”

With podium number two in the bag for Ricciardo, he said that his Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul has already told him that doesn’t mean tattoo number two is on the way after a previously arranged bet between the pair.

Ricciardo said: “Before he said congratulations he said ‘don’t even think about getting me two tattoos. It’s just going to be one!”

Ricciardo’s second podium in three races sees him hold a 10-point gap over Charles Leclerc for P4 in the World Championship standings.
