Sebastian Vettel: Aston Martin ticked all the boxes | F1 News by PlanetF1

Sebastian Vettel was persuaded to join the Aston Martin project because of Lawrence Stroll’s “will to really do something and do something good”.

Vettel will race for Aston Martin next season, having signed a deal for “2021 and beyond”.

The German heads to the Silverstone-based team, currently running under the Racing Point moniker, acknowledging that it will be a very different challenge to his six seasons at Ferrari.

Although he is joining an outfit that has never won a grand prix, never mind fought for a World title, Vettel says he was persuaded to sign by team owner Stroll’s sales pitch.

Asked what convinced him to make the move, he told the ‘Beyond the Grid’ podcast: “Well, he [Stroll] did. I think the fact that the team is growing. A lot of factors.

“Those boxes were quite easy to tick in terms of the performance. The racing side of things – where the team is, where the team might be, the potential, and so on.

“But more so I think it was the mindset, and the will to really do something and do something good, bring something good together.

“And it sounds like a fun project, and something that ultimately I decided I want to be part of.

“So, it is very different to Ferrari, obviously.

“Racing Point as it stands today, and in the future Aston Martin will be growing, there will be a lot of things happening for the first time.

“I think it’s an incredible challenging journey for the whole team and with me joining I hope I can contribute a lot of things and do good in the car and outside the car.”

Aside from their on-track results, Racing Point is a very different team to Ferrari especially when it comes to numbers.

Those numbers not only relate to points scored but also number of staff and the size of the budget available.

Vettel acknowledges it is a “different team, different culture” and he is looking forward to it.

“I love racing and I’m looking forward to go racing,” he said.

“As I said I don’t regret the last years and I’ve learned a lot in my time with Ferrari, about a different team, a different culture, got to make a lot of friends as well along the way.

“But yeah, certainly Ferrari is a special team in many ways, and I guess where I’m going will be different.”
