Sebastian Vettel doubts fans would have 'booed' Ferrari at Monza

Sebastian Vettel has downplayed suggestions that there is one up side to not having fans at Monza, Ferrari won’t get “booed”.

2020 is not shaping up to be a good season for Ferrari, in fact it is one of their worst.

The Scuderia has scored just 61 points in seven races putting them 203 behind Mercedes in the race for the Constructors’ title, down in fifth place.

Ferrari’s season went from bad to worse last weekend in Belgium as the team failed to score a single point at a race that they finished 1-2 12 months earlier.

Vettel was 13th on the day with Charles Leclerc 14th in what was Ferrari’s worst two-race result in a decade.

More pain is expected at Monza, a high-speed fast-flowing circuit.

It is also Ferrari’s home race, the first of three grands prix taking place on Italian soil this season, and will be followed by Mugello, another Italian venue.

Put to Vettel that perhaps it is good thing that fans won’t be allowed at Monza, he said he doubts the tifosi would turn against Ferrari even in the midst of their struggles.

“I don’t think we would get booed,” he told Motorsportweek.com.

“The fans are suffering probably as much as the whole team. So if I had a choice I would still bring the fans back but obviously at the moment it is not a choice for us and not possible.

“Nevertheless it will be important races for us coming up. It is true it will be difficult in Monza as well.

“But still I have always some optimism and hope that some of the problems that seem to slow us this weekend can be understood and we can tackle them next week and be in a better place.

“’Better place’ doesn’t mean we can win the race but hopefully we can be stronger than this weekend.”

Last year Ferrari won the Monza race with Leclerc victorious at the Italian Grand Prix while Vettel was third.
