Sebastian Vettel hopes to give Aston Martin first to taste champagne | F1 News by PlanetF1

Sebastian Vettel enjoyed his “Sprite” on the Turkey podium, but hopes he can be the one to give Aston Martin their first taste of champagne.

Once the curtain falls on the 2020 season with it will come the end of Vettel’s six-year stint with Ferrari.

The four-time World Champion wasn’t able to add another World Championship to his CV with the Scuderia, but in what has been a difficult 2020 for him, Vettel was glad to visit the podium again after a P3 finish at the Turkish Grand Prix.

Asked to explain the emotions of that podium by reporters ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, Vettel replied: “Maybe a bit of everything, it was nice to be back up [there] after such a long time.

“I’ve said it before the only thing they had on offer was Sprite not champagne, so that was maybe a reason to go back up there very soon.

“Obviously it was nice and nice to have the trophy, also nice to be honest to witness the big day that Lewis [Hamilton] had on that day.”

Hamilton of course celebrated the victory in Turkey which gave him a record-equalling seventh World Championship.

And with that title it means that over the past 11 seasons, Vettel and Hamilton have been crowned World Champion 10 times between them.

Asked if the relationship between himself and Hamilton is one of friendship or respect, Vettel replied: “Well I think there is something that connects us anyway, we love racing and I think we’ve achieved something in the sport.

“We’re not hanging out every day and we are very different on some things, but I think we have a lot of respect for each other.

“So it’s a good foundation for a friendship, but maybe happening later on when we have more time. Over the years we probably got closer.”

Hamilton, as of yet isn’t tied down to Mercedes for 2021, but Vettel we know will be moving on to Racing Point, or Aston Martin as they will be known for 2021.

The final piece of the Turkey podium, that being Sergio Perez who finished P2, is the driver that Vettel will replace next year.

So while Perez enjoyed his Sprite alongside Vettel, the four-time World Champion hopes it can be he who gives Aston Martin their first taste of champagne.

“Well, it could be their first podium with champagne then,” he said with a smile.

“Hopefully we can make that happen. I think it’s a very promising and bright future, obviously a lot of good things are happening and I can’t wait to join and see how things look and try and do everything I can to get the champagne.”
