Sebastian Vettel unsure if it will get 'political' with Charles Leclerc

Sebastian Vettel has said he does “not know yet” whether his partnership with Charles Leclerc at Ferrari will lead to “unnecessary” politics.

Vettel’s second-longest team-mate relationship, with Kimi Raikkonen, has come to an end after 81 races and three years together at the Scuderia.

Ferrari have opted for youth rather than experience going forward, replacing Raikkonen with Leclerc, who enjoyed a very successful rookie campaign with Sauber in 2018.

Vettel said that he lived in harmonious times with Raikkonen at Ferrari throughout their spell together, but does not have any indication at this stage as to whether the same environment will be created with Leclerc.

“I do not know that yet,” Vettel told German publication Blick.

“The harmony between me and Kimi meant that there were not unnecessary politics.

“We have always left each other the necessary space and thus not give the team unnecessary worries.”

Vettel said only time will tell how he works with Leclerc, but his task, no matter which team-mate he has, will always remain the same.

“Everyone is different, and how Charles and I will tick together will become apparent.

“But he is a well-bred boy and Ferrari is a huge chance for him.

“The basic law will not change this time either: everyone wants to beat each other.”
