Toto Wolff rubbishes Alfa Romeo engine rumours

Toto Wolff says rumours that Mercedes’ engines could follow Valtteri Bottas to Alfa Romeo are “not true”.

After five years of racing for Mercedes, Bottas’ days in Brackley are almost over – at least according to the rumour mill.

The Finn is said to be heading to Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season with his Mercedes seat going to George Russell.

But a report from Swiss outlet Blick claims Bottas won’t be only Mercedes import heading to Alfa Romeo with his arrival also heralding the beginning of a new engine partnership.

Alfa Romeo, the rumour mill is suggesting, would say farewell to Ferrari and instead move over to Mercedes power.

Wolff says there is no truth to the rumour.

“No, the rumours are not true,” the Austrian told Sky Germany. “I believe Alfa Romeo has a contract with Ferrari.

“We are supplying engines to four teams and are absolute on the limit.”

Alfa Romeo team boss Fred Vasseur is also said to be ‘very annoyed’ by the rumours, pointing out that it is impossible to switch engine suppliers at this stage in the development and designing of the team’s 2022 car.

But Alfa Romeo could yet have two Mercedes drivers at the team next season with Wolff looking at Nyck de Vries’ Formula 1 options.

While the Mercedes motorsport boss seems keen on placing the Formula E champion with Williams, if that seat goes to Alex Albon, Alfa Romeo is the other options for the Dutchman.

Ralf Schumacher says he’d like to see de Vries competing in Formula 1.

“He really deserved the chance,” said the former F1 driver. “He was a winner in Formula 2, and by the way that was with ART, so that link might lead there if there is another seat available next to Valtteri Bottas.”

Alfa Romeo team boss Vasseur was the founder of ART Grand Prix.
