AMSOIL Woodward Dream Cruise Week Road Tour Part 5

While the actual official Woodward Dream Cruise takes place on the third Saturday of August each year, the fun gets started much sooner than that. On the AMSOIL Woodward Week Road Tour we have been visiting cool places for the last five days. By Friday it was time to get down to some serious cruising on Woodward Avenue. Our first stop was down south of 7 Mile Road on the lower part of Woodward. We visited the site of the famous Ford Highland Park Assembly Plant. When the Ford Model T was at the height of its popularity Henry Ford introduced the assembly line to the auto industry. There was a Model T rolling off the line every minute. While most of the buildings are gone, the main showroom building is still standing. It is hard to imagine the activity that was taking place in this area during the ’20s.

From Highland Park we traveled north on Woodward to 9 Mile Road, which is the town of Ferndale. It is also the location of the Ford exhibits and displays during the Dream Cruise, including the famous Mustang Alley. Friday is setup day in Ferndale but there was still lots of activities. On Saturday the intersection of Woodward and 9 Mile will be packed with cars and car enthusiasts.

Continuing up Woodward we made our way to Royal Oak and our parking location for Friday and Saturday in Memorial Park. Each year about 800 hot rods, customs, and special-interest vehicles fill Memorial Park. With the help of Bob and Sandy Millard who coordinate activities in the park, the Road Tour has special parking and a large hospitality tent for all of the Tour participants. It is just about 20 yards from Woodward and the perfect spot to enjoy all the action.

Cruising continued until after dark on Friday night. Saturday was the official day that everyone had been looking forward to. We all got to the park early and watched the cruisers. At noon we took a group picture by the tent. The weather was perfect and Woodward was lined with people from 7 Mile all the way up to Pontiac. The 25th Woodward Dream Cruise was fantastic. What started as a fund-raiser for a soccer field 25 years agor has become one of the largest automotive events in the world. The AMSOIL Woodward Dream Cruise Week was fantastic also. Many thanks to all of the great folks who welcomed us during the tou. It was a week that we will all remember for a long time.
