Drivers should be wary of what they say to their car mechanics if they want to be certain their vehicle is in good hands, a motoring expert has warned.
During the cost-of-living crisis, many drivers are looking at saving money wherever possible, but being rude to a mechanic may lead to higher prices.
Firstly, the mechanic explained that drivers should never ask how long it will take for their car to be fixed.
While waiting for a vehicle to be repaired may waste a few hours of a driver’s day, the mechanic must be sure that they have spent enough time working on the car in order to do their job properly.
If a motorist categorically needs to know how much time the mechanic is likely to take, they should be kind to the mechanic, asking them if they could say when the job is complete.

Additionally, the mechanic highlighted that drivers should not show their frustration at high prices for vehicle repairs.
Suggesting that their work costs an arm, and a leg may insult the mechanic, making them believe that the driver does not respect their skills.
Nevertheless, to avoid any unpleasant surprises, drivers should always ask the mechanic for a quote before agreeing for the work to take place.

Another phrase that motorists should avoid saying to mechanics is “I was going to take my car elsewhere, but you were the closest place”.
Whilst a driver may see this as harmless small talk, the mechanic may take offense to it, believing the vehicle owner considers them an inferior worker.
However, it is also important not to shower the mechanic with compliments, which may come across as sarcasm.
While it may seem trivial, choosing the right things to say to a mechanic can affect the service drivers receive.
With years of training and an understanding of a variety of different models, mechanics are often put under a lot of pressure to get the job done properly.
Being polite and leaving them to their work will not only make a mechanic respect a driver more, but it could also lead to slightly lower prices.
