Oxford’s new ZEZ pilot will cover just nine streets across the city centre in a blow to residents and owners of petrol and diesel cars. The roads are featured right in the heart of the city and could have a profound effect on students.

Oxford’s famous Jesus and Balliol College are located near the affected roads, while St Peter’s College and Nuffield College are also close.

The whole length of seven roads is set to be affected by the ZEZ scheme.

These cover Bonn Square, Queen Street, Cornmarket Street, New Inn Hall Street, Shoe Lane, Ship Street and St Michael’s Street.

However, two further Oxford roads will only be partially affected.

New Road will have charges between Bonn Square and its junction with Castle Street.

Meanwhile, Market Street will also be included in the ZEZ from the junction with Cornmarket, extending east for 40 metres.

The number of affected roads could be extended if the scheme is considered a success.

Oxfordshire County Council said the ZEZ will allow them to gain useful insights before launching a larger scheme.

This second phase is expected to launch next year, subject to further public consultation.

Proposals for the second phase of the ZEZ have already been released and would see fees extend out to Oxpens Road in the South and Parks Road in the North.

However, the busy Abingdon and Botley Roads would still be unaffected by the second phase.

Drivers of the most polluting petrol and diesel vehicles will pay £10 per day to enter the ZEZ.
