Malcolm Mckay, spokesperson for the Historic and Classic Vehicle Alliance (HCVA) said availability could be “limited in some places” when E5 moves to the Super Unleaded protection grade. He warned many supermarkets and areas “don’t sell Super Unleaded” fuel despite an expected “increased demand” once E5 moves over.
He said: “I think what’s interesting is to get some figures on the sales of E10 and E5.
“Availability of E5 is quite limited in some places, a lot of supermarkets don’t sell Super Unleaded.
“My local supermarket has just one pump out of nine pumps that has the Super Unleaded.
“I went there yesterday and one side was out of stock already, fortunately, there was still some on the other side.
“I think there will have been a noticeable increased demand for it and it will be interesting to see if petrol stations start filling a few more tanks of higher octane than they used to.”
He added: “I think there are enough stations out there with it.
“But I think they will find they have to re-stock a lot more often than they used to.
“We were in Ireland in 2019 preparing for a rally and we couldn’t get Super Unleaded anywhere.

“Higher octane fuel simply isn’t available, you can only get 95.”
The Government’s Introducing E10 fuel consultation confirms E5 fuel will remain as the higher-octane protection grade at petrol stations.
They say E5 will continue to be stocked at all filling stations which offer at least two different grades of petrol.
Petrol stations which sold at least one million litres of fuel in the last calendar year will also be required to stock E5 fuel.
