The Historic and Classic Vehicles Alliance (HCVA) said there was a “collective will” to deliver “positive outcomes” to the issues. The HCVA has been pushing to work collaboratively with the DVLA to address classic car registration concerns.

They have offered to help with the applications for original or age-related registrations.

This will help the DVLA to determine which cars have back histories and legitimate details which could allow a car to be registered.

Under the current system, there are difficulties with registering classic models which are not on any databases.

These can include cars found in barns or imported from other countries.

If the talks are successful, this could dramatically decrease the waiting time for classic car owners to register their historic models.

The HCVA said the changes will also make it more straightforward to register classic vehicles.

Garry Wilson, CEO of the HCVA said they understood the “unprecedented challenges” of the DVLA but still targeted a successful outcome.

However, he urged owners to have “patience” despite targeting some “short-term” victories.

He said: “The meeting was extremely positive and the discussion very open.

“We recognise the unprecedented challenges the DVLA faces and also frustrations of our members and the wider classic vehicle fraternity.

“It was a pleasure to see the collective will to deliver positive outcomes to these challenges and frustrations.”

He added: “These things take time and whilst we will target some short-term positive outcomes, we urge patience as we establish the Historic and Classic Vehicle User Group and strengthen the positive relationship created at this first meeting.”
