Eighth straight year of record sales for BMW Group Malaysia – 14,338 units combined, 13% growth

BMW Group Malaysia has announced its performance results for 2018, and it’s an eighth consecutive year of growth in sales for the company, which sold a to total of 14,338 units of BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad vehicles last year. This represents a 13% increase in overall numbers from the 12,681 units managed in 2017.

The company introduced a total of 12 new models across the BMW and MINI brands last year, and the core BMW brand naturally led the way, with 12,008 units delivered in 2018, a jump of 13% from the 10,618 units accomplished last year. The largest contributor was the 3 Series with 3,363 units, of which 2,149 were made up of the 330e M Sport plug-in hybrid.

The X5 xDrive40e also featured strongly, with over 2,900 units delivered. Meanwhile, sales of the 5 Series totaled 2,761 units, of which 1,769 (or 64%) were 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid.

As for MINI, the brand sold 1,200 vehicles last year, an 18% growth over the 1,011 units managed in 2017. The company revealed that it sold over 90 units of the MINI Cooper S E Countryman All4 plug-in hybrid last year following the model’s introduction in April. It added that electrified vehicles made up 57% of the total number of cars delivered by the company, or 7,532 units from the BMW and MINI brands combined.


Sales of the brand’s motorcycles also climbed, with BMW Motorrad products finding 1,130 new owners. This represents a seven percent increase from the 1,052 units managed in 2017. The R 1200 GS Adventure was a key performer for the brand, with 300 units shifted last year.

The premium automaker also grew its infrastructure for electro-mobility in the country – aside from engine assembly for the MINI Countryman plug-in at the new Sime Darby Auto Engineering (SDAE) engine assembly facility in Kulim, Kedah, the brand also introduced new BMW i charging facilities in four different states last year.

Elsewhere, BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia reported that an increase in its portfolio, with over 6,100 contracts signed in 2018. The company reported that it financed every four out of ten BMW and MINI vehicles delivered last year as well as every six out of ten BMW Motorrad vehicles in 2018. It also insured every seven out of ten vehicles from BMW Group Malaysia.
