The AA warns “drivers won’t have the luxury” of leaving bookings until the last minute as demand surges ahead of “Super September”. Their comments suggest drivers could be left struggling to secure an MOT test if this will expire next month.

This means drivers will either be forced off the road or possibly fined up to £1,000 for travelling without a valid test certificate.

He said: “With more than 5.5 million cars deferring an MOT it is crucial that they are tested to ensure they are safe to use.

“MOT centres are already feeling the strain and with ‘Super September’ looming, savvy drivers can get ahead of the game.

“Don’t delay, book today. With bookings up to 90 days in advance, all drivers can use AA Smart Care to find trusted local garages to keep their vehicle on the road.

“Usually people leave booking their MOT to the last possible moment, drivers won’t have that luxury this time.”

The AA has warned September is the month where most MOT test extensions fall.

They said this would cause a flurry of MOT bookings as the delayed vehicles mix with those who are usually due their test this month.

More than five and a half million cars took advantage of the delay last year and are now due tests at different times than before the pandemic.
