New Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo previewed in design sketches

Skoda will soon bring its Monte Carlo specification to the Fabia hatch – but with no vRS model planned, it’s the sportiest version we’ll get

Skoda is preparing to launch a sporty Monte Carlo version of the fourth-generation Fabia supermini. The new specification is expected for the hatchback later this year, offering buyers a few sporty styling tweaks inside and out.

One thing the new Monte Carlo spec won’t offer, though, is any extra performance. Skoda hasn’t confirmed what engines the trim-level will be offered with, but we’re fairly certain the most powerful version will be powered by the Volkswagen Group’s familiar 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine.

The engine produces 148bhp and 250Nm of torque and, in the standard Fabia, it’ll only be available with a seven-speed automatic gearbox – a feature which is backed up by the brand’s new design sketch. Skoda also says the powertrain can push the Fabia from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds.

If the lack of a manual gearbox wasn’t enough, there’s a little more bad news for hot hatch fans and keen drivers. As Skoda isn’t planning to launch a vRS version of the Fabia, the Monte Carlo will be the sportiest version of the hatchback on the market.

Still, it should at least look the part. The sporty Fabia gets the same aggressive makeover as the rest of Skoda’s Monte Carlo models, with a lower front splitter, wider side skirts, a chunky rear diffuser, bigger alloy wheels and a new spoiler for the tailgate.

The interior won’t be left out of the makeover, either, with buyers getting sports seats, a leather-trimmed handbrake and gearstick gaiter, red stitching for all of the upholstery and a new sports steering wheel with a “Monte Carlo” badge. Skoda also plans to pepper the door cards and dashboard with red plastic and carbon-fibre style trim.

Prices for the new Fabia Monte Carlo are yet to be confirmed. However, the trim-level usually sits at the top of the Skoda’s model ranges (when there isn’t a vRS model available). Prices could be around £21,000, meaning the Skoda would toe the line between the Ford Fiesta ST-Line and the Volkswagen Polo R Line.
