Subaru stops production at its Gunma plant due to defective component – Malaysian vehicles not affected

Subaru has stopped production at its Gunma plant for several days due to a defective electric power steering component from its supplier, Hitachi Automotive Systems. The shutdown at Subaru’s sole Japanese plant is expected to last until Monday (January 28, 2019).

According to an official statement, models that are affected by this issue include the Forester, Impreza and XV made between late December 2018 and January 16, 2019. Affected vehicles will have a warning light flash in the instrument panel, and the steering wheel will feel heavier due to a malfunctioning power steering system.

For now, the carmaker is investigating the matter, and has yet to announce an official recall for affected vehicles. The stop in production will likely have an impact on Subaru’s consolidated business results, although it isn’t disclosing any info for now.

Motor Image Group (MIG), the distributor of Subaru vehicles in nine countries – including Malaysia – has announced that the defect does not affect any of its customers. This is because none of the affected production has been delivered to MIG customers.
