Top Gear’s James May claims Volvo has ‘ruined his life’ over new plans

Volvo shows features of ‘driver support system’ for car safety

Former Top Gear host James May has joked that popular car manufacturer Volvo has “ruined his life”.

The ex-BBC star even stressed the Swedish firm was “spoiling it for British people” as they announced a major change to their production plans.

It comes after the company announced it would become an SUV-only brand in the UK, scrapping orders for its estate and saloon models.

It means Volvo’s S60, V60 and V90 models have been axed just months after its S90 saloon was dropped in June.

The manufacturer has suggested demand was behind the decision with interest in their models falling to “very low levels”.

May tweeted: “Volvo has announced that, from now on, it will only make SUVs. So my assumption of an agreeable Volvo saloon in retirement has been snatched from me.

“This is the second time Volvo has ruined my life. For the first time, see my book Carbolics.”

Volvo cheekily responded to May with a tongue-in-cheek dig at his astonishing remark. They commented: “Hi James – we’re so sorry to have ruined your life (again).

“To clarify, we’re still making saloon and estate cars. This is purely a sales decision in the UK market, where demand for SUVs is especially strong.”

May continued the hilarious exchange as he laughed the company had now “publicly” humiliated him for calling out his inaccuracies.

He added: “Volvo ruins my life for the third time by publicly fact-shaming me. But I should have included ‘for the UK’ for absolutely clarity. They are only spoiling everything for British people. Foreigners can still buy proper Volvos, and should.” (sic)

Volvo has claimed the decision was made to “evolve and consolidate” the line-up as they slowly move to production of electric models.

The manufacturer also revealed there was “strong” interest in their electric model range. It means UK drivers can buy just four Volvo models brand new with the C40, XC40, XC60 and XC90 available.

However, the electric EX30 and EX90 Flagship machine will be added to the collection from next year.

A Volvo statement read: “We continue to rapidly transform our product offer, which means not only moving towards full electrification, but also shifting to new platforms and technologies across all our cars.

“We will naturally need to evolve and consolidate our line-up as we prioritise fully electric cars and make this technological transition. As a result, we have removed further models from the UK line-up.”
