Toyota - US Tuner Tears Down The Supra's B58 Engine To Kick Off 1000bhp Project - Tuning

It was inevitable that we’d see a fair few 2JZ-swapped A90 Toyota Supras. The first few – including one from HKS – are already here, and it probably won’t be long before 2J’d GR Supras with four-figure power outputs emerge.

That’s all well and good, but what about the B58 BMW inline-six the A90 leaves the factory with? Munich’s modern turbocharged straight-sixes have gained a reputation for being highly tunable, and we’ve already seen Litchfield raise the 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged unit to 420bhp with a simple ECU tweak. Over in the US, meanwhile, Papadakis Racing is hoping to take things much further.

The Californian firm – which you might remember for Frederic Asbo’s 1000bhp drift Corolla, among other mad projects – intends to push the engine to 1000bhp.

Company owner Stephan Papadakis admits that “this engine is all new to me and I honestly don’t know how I’m going to get there,” although that seems to be a driving force behind the project. “It’s exciting: I live for the challenge of exploring the unknown and pushing toward a goal,” he said.

The first step is a complete teardown of the B58 engine, to give the team an idea of what they’re working with, and the direction the project might take. The process is detailed in this informative video, where we’re given a look at the B58’s interesting features such as an internal exhaust manifold and its variable valve timing system.

We’ll be watching this one with interest…
