EPA Confirms the VW ID.4 Gets 260 Miles of Range

It might not come as a huge surprise after it just completed a cross-country journey, but Volkswagen’s ID.4 finally has a confirmed range of 260 miles. This is good news for the ever-expanding electric-vehicle space, and for prospective ID.4 shoppers. Note that this range is for the rear-wheel-drive models as opposed to the more power-hungry all-wheel-drive-equipped variants.

This confirmed range surpasses both the estimated 250-mile range and the Tesla Model Y’s 244 miles of EPA-certified range. Of course, the Tesla range ticks up significantly with optional battery packages. Still, even though the ID.4 is bested by a higher-optioned Tesla Model Y, the ID.4’s 260-mile range is more than respectable.

That range comes from an 82 kWh battery that feeds a permanent magnet AC motor that makes 201 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque. According to Volkswagen, this battery can also be brought from a five percent charge to an 80 percent charge in only 38 minutes. While that’s still considerably longer than refueling your VW Atlas, it is a shrinking charging time. Add to that, VW is handing out three years of unlimited charging at Electrify America DC fast chargers to those that sign on the dotted line.

If you’re starting to get swayed in the electrified crossover direction, VW will sell you an ID.4 for $39,995 before any federal tax credits help make that price shrink. Of course, there’s good news also from Volkswagen if you’re trying to keep your internal-combustion-engine dreams live with synthetic fuel, which you can read about here.
