Genesis reveals G70 Shooting Brake

Don't go buying a VW Arteon just yet – Genesis has an alternative

Things move fast at Genesis. Just last week came confirmation of a UK launch for Hyundai and Kia’s luxury offshoot with the G80 saloon and GV80 SUV – now we have another model added to the line-up. And it’s one that ought to chime rather nicely with PH tastes: the G70 Shooting Brake.

Because we all like a potent family wagon, don’t we? From T5 Volvos to Audi RS6s and vRS Skodas to AMG ‘bahnstormers, the fast estate has a long and rich history in the UK. Though the Genesis will have to go some way to achieving the status of those cars, the initial details do make for reasonably encouraging reading.

Though not enormous – 4,685mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,400mm tall, so no longer than the four-door – the Shooting Brake does bring a 40 per cent larger boot than the saloon. Trouble is that somehow it only has 330 litres of capacity, which by our maths means 462 for the G70 SB. Which is probably why it’s not mentioned in the press release – an Octavia estate is a similar length, with 640 litres…

But then a Skoda doesn’t look quite this good. Brand signatures like the grille and light design arguably suit the swoopier estate better than anything else yet seen from Genesis, the “athletic intent” spoken of perhaps not as far-fetched as it could be.

Quite how athletic the G70 Shooting Brake will be remains to be seen, as Genesis is yet to divulge any powertrain details. Obviously the V6 slated for the larger G80 would make for an instant cult hero, but a 3.5-litre turbo might be a little much for something the size of a Focus estate. Expect instead a range of four-cylinders borrowed from elsewhere in the Hyundai and Kia empire, with no doubt some electrification to follow.

Genesis says this Shooting Brake has been “designed with European customers in mind” European MD Dominique Boesch said the new car “marries luxury and European automotive heritage with our design philosophy of Athletic Elegance. Our fifth car in Europe, the Shooting Brake will stand apart through its unique design; it is a clear statement of our commitment to the region.” Which sounds encouraging if nothing else. With four models to go on sale first – the G80 and GV80 in the summer, followed by the G70 saloon and GV70 – it would be a surprise if the Shooting Brake is on sale before 2021 is out. Would be quite the way to kick off 2022, though…
