Week to Wicked: Installing The Exhaust System

Super Chevy’s W2W 1969 Camaro Presented by POL

Adding the exhaust system to the Super Chevy Week to Wicked 1969 Camaro started midway through the week with the installation of the Hooker headers, and it was completed near the end of Day 5 when the pipes and Flowmaster mufflers were put in place. Hooker and Flowmaster are both divisions of Holley Performance Products.
Hooker contributed a pair of Blackheart headers (PN: 70201505HKR) to the project. The mid-length headers feature 1 3/4-inch primaries, running to a 3 1/2-inch collector. The size of the primaries affects where the torque peak falls on the engine rpm range—the larger the pipe, the higher the rpm of the torque peak. Going too big reduces backpressure, which can hurt low range performances. These headers are a suitable size for the W2W Camaro’s supercharged LS engine.

Hooker offers these headers in silver ceramic coating, black ceramic coating, or black paint. The Week to Wicked Camaro is running black ceramic coated headers, in keeping with the look of the Blackout suspension and brake components from Performance Online.

Flowmaster has exhaust systems for V-8 engine 1969 Camaros in 2 1/2-inch and 3-inch diameters. We used their universal dual-exhaust kit with 3-inch tubing in various bend configurations, plus H-pipe pieces. The system is corked with Flowmaster Super 40 mufflers, designed specifically for high-horsepower applications. These will give the W2W Camaro a nice, deep tone—and the black case fits the other black accents all over the car.
In addition to the basic tools we’ve been using for the entire week to wicked build, a chop saw and welder are necessary for the exhaust system installation, particularly when using a universal kit. POL’s Randy Garrett, who performed the job, recommends raising a car on a 4-post lift to simplify the project. A 2-post lift is less efficient. Doing the job on the ground with jack stands is a challenge but not impossible. We used the MotorTrend tech center’s 2-post lifts with safety stands to support the rearend and other components.
