Gran Turismo Sport Wins the 2018 TIGA Award for Best Audio Design

Gran Turismo Sport has received the title of “Best Audio Design” from the 2018 TIGA Games Industry Awards panel. It wasn’t up against the usual collection of racing games, however: this was across all genres.

Only one other racing game — Codemaster’s Onrush — was up for the award, but fell short. While one can argue other racing games should have competed, the short list of recipients isn’t what you’d expect. In fact, both GT Sport and Onrush are the odd ones out. The full list of nominees is as follows:

  • Codemasters – ONRUSH
  • Creative Assembly – A Total War Saga: THRONES OF BRITANNIA
  • Curve Digital Publishing Ltd – Human: Fall Flat
  • Ninja Theory – Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
  • Polyphony Digital Inc – Gran Turismo Sport
  • Rare Ltd – Sea of Thieves
  • Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe – Detroit: Become Human
  • Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe – God of War
  • Supermassive Games – The Inpatient
  • Ubisoft Reflections – Ode
  • Ustwo Games – Monument Valley 2

This is an about-face for the franchise often criticized for its sound direction. While there’s still room for improvement, GT Sport is the best entry in the franchise to date in this regard. We said as much in our original GT Sport review, and it still holds up today — especially with that 787B.

Of course, it’s important to point out this is about more than the audio direction for the cars themselves. It’s the entire package down to the soundtrack — it’s all a factor. Congratulations to Polyphony Digital for securing the award among some seriously tough competition across the genres.
