Penalty recommended for van Gisbergen, decision tomorrow

The Deputy Race Director has recommended that winner Shane van Gisbergen be penalised for a pitstop infringement during today’s Supercars, however a final decision won’t be made until tomorrow.

After taking a thrilling win that closed the title fight to within two points heading into tomorrow’s final race, van Gisbergen found himself subject to a post-race investigation over a pitstop breach.

The issue was his car being dropped before the fuel hose had been disconnected, with the regulations stating “the car must have all four (4) wheels off the ground while refuelling is taking place”.

After a lengthy investigation, the Deputy Race Director has recommended that the stop was indeed a breach, and that a penalty – the nature of which is yet to be confirmed – should be applied.

That determination has been contested by Triple Eight Race Engineering, with stewards set to reconvene in the morning to properly consider the matter.

Should the result stand, van Gisbergen will go into the final race of the year just two points behind Scott McLaughlin.

Tomorrow’s action consists of a qualifying session, a Top 10 Shootout, and a 95-lap race.
