Ford’s New GPS Navigation System: Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Roads (or Cell Service)

One of the best things about off-roading is getting away from it all — but “it all” also includes internet and cell services, which can make using maps and directions tough. Ford is debuting new software to keep connected navigation technologies working on way-out-there adventures.

The automaker is partnering with Telenav, a provider of connected-car and location-based services, to offer a hybrid navigation system that stores maps and continues routing if drivers go out of cell range — unlike traditional smartphone map apps that stop working.

The system also offers tailored route suggestions for towing and uses the dimensions of a driver’s trailer to suggest routes that avoid sharp turns, narrow bridges and low overpasses. It also lists many off-road trails across the country, with more to be added over time, according to Ford.

For on-road driving, the system features extras like information about where to find cheap parking, area landmarks and Yelp reviews for area businesses.

It’s part of the Sync 4 multimedia system and available in two of the automaker’s most capable off-roaders, the upcoming redesigned 2021 F-150 pickup truck and all-new 2021 Bronco SUV
